Do you use "a" after extranar only when referring to a country or person. For example: El extrana a Espana. El extrana a sus amigos. What about: El extrana la cultura. Or if the country is not specified, e.g., El extrana su pais de origen,. Thank you.

I thought your question was interesting, in that I believe I have heard "to miss a country" both with and without the "a". This prompted a google.com.mx search, and I got hits both ways.

Clearly you need the "a" before the name of a person, but the"a" before a country appears to be optional (maybe regional? maybe puts more emphasis on your personal involvement with people in that country?). There are no hits for "a" before missing culture, food, etc.

That is right. And you can use the "a" before any object that you treat as a person, like your pet, your favorite team, your country, and so on.

"tilde" is the line over the "n" - it is this: ñ - mountaingirl123, Oct 27, 2011
