Repente

suddenly, all of a sudden (de repente)

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted November 26 , 2011.

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

Stay tuned for the last post, and we will tell you which are the two chosen posts - the most voted, and the one chosen by the moderators.

My Example:

Recuerdo el día que oí a dos personas que estaban hablando en español y no podía entenderles. De repente me di cuenta de que quería aprender este idioma.

I remember the day that I heard two people that were talking in Spanish and I couldn’t understand them. Suddenly I realized that I wanted to learn this language.

Estaba durmiendo cuando repente un ruido fuerte me despertó. Miré por toda la habitación, luego me di cuenta de que ¡había estado soñando!

With Heidita's corrections:

Estaba durmiendo cuando de repente un ruido fuerte me despertó. Miré por toda la habitación, luego me di cuenta de que ¡había estado soñando!

I was sleeping when suddenly a loud noise woke me up. I looked around the room, then I realised I had been dreaming!

(I am trying to push myself a little now. I hope I haven't made too much of a mess lol.)

yay muchas gracias amiga mia! The thing is, it took me about 20 minutes to write this sentence. Before I can consider myself to be 'intermediate' perhaps I need to get this down to 2 minutes lol. What do you think Heidita? - billygoat, Oct 27, 2011
Great job, Billy:) - migelis, Oct 27, 2011
Hola goat! - Jraider, Oct 27, 2011
hi jraider! - billygoat, Oct 27, 2011
lol. Yes, Billy. Let's say two minutes. I called myself "intermediate" about 2 years ago. Now that I know more, I consider myself a beginner! - MLucie, Oct 27, 2011
Billy, the most important is that your posts are always wonderful!!! :D - PrincessMariam, Oct 27, 2011
@MLucie, I downgraded myself from Intermediate to Beginner about a week after I joined this forum lol. We have some seriously talented people on here! - billygoat, Oct 27, 2011

Cuando sus ojos se encontraron estando en la barra del bar, el supo de repente que ella sería la madre de sus hijos, ella por su parte supo que sus tragos no le costarían nada esa noche.

When their eyes met in the bar he suddenly knew that she would be the mother of his children. On the other hand, she suddenly knew that her drinks would be for free that night. smile

well done! 'by the other side' should be *on the other hand* - billygoat, Oct 27, 2011
Bill I don't think *the other hand* really fits this either, I would say *at the same time/moment* she suddenly..... - Yeser007, Oct 27, 2011
yeser - I know what you mean, I was trying to match what I think he was trying to say. - billygoat, Oct 27, 2011
jeje, billy is right, good job bily - 00494d19, Oct 27, 2011
I would just say "while" instead of "by the other side" They look like they could be brother and sister. - rabbitwho, Oct 27, 2011
estoy de acuerdo Rabbit, creo que es la barba de media tarde je je :) - Kiwi-Girl, Oct 27, 2011
@ Billy creo que la 'on the other hand' cabe perfectamente en este ocasión especialmente como un juego de palabras porque ella está levantando el mano je je - Kiwi-Girl, Oct 27, 2011
@ xtiagox - muy chistoso :) - Kiwi-Girl, Oct 27, 2011
Hey Rabbit, a brother doesn't look at his sister like that ;) - Yeser007, Oct 27, 2011

I would also add "just or simply" for effect...you just can't avoid them. - Yeser007, Oct 27, 2011

Frenar de repente es muy peligroso. Debemos respetar la distancia de seguridad.

To brake all of a sudden is very dangerous. We have to maintain a safe distance .

Porcupine, for the English I would use: To brake..... /there is something about "distance of security" that just doesn't sound right to me, perhaps "the security of distance" but let someone else weigh in on this one. - Yeser007, Oct 27, 2011

coffe, el sujeto siempre delante del verbo;) - 00494d19, Oct 27, 2011
I might add that at least in US English, we usually "make a wish" so "...I made a wish". :-) - Stadt, Oct 27, 2011
I would change the word order in the English: A shooting star suddenly appeared in the sky and I made a wish. - MaryMcc, Oct 27, 2011
