bueno is an adjective and bien is an adverb (describes a verb or an adjective)
It is tricky! It can be used, sometimes, in both situations but not in all of them. For example, you can say, "I'm good, fine, well" = "Estoy bien", but it can also be, "Estoy bueno" = I am hot! - You can also say, Ok, I've have to go = ¡Bueno, me tengo que ir! -- You can use it to say. That's a good man! ¡Ese es un hombre bueno! but you would not say, Ese es un hombre bien. You will get to to point where it just make sense and becomes natural. But yes, it is confusing! There is not really a "rule" Context will tell you and it will sound right or not.
