Normally I see clearly why imperfect subjunctive vs imperfect past but on this one I wonder.
El jefe de seguridad está muerto. (they killed him)
¿Está muerto?
No sabía que estuviera enfermo.
Is it because he died? If he wasn't sick anymore and was still alive then I think it would be estaba.

Jeezle, did someone actually say this? "Estuviera" no tiene sentido a mi, pero no soy experta. Espanol no es mi idioma natal.....Pero tengo una pregunta... -was the security guard sick, or do they think he may have been sick? There lies the answer.
Estoy confudida. Está muerto" only means he is dead. It doesn't mean that he was killed.
But if you're saying the man was killed and you know that he was....Well, I guess it's a sarcastic way of saying he must have been sick for them to kill him (though in reality, he probably wasn't). If that's the case, it makes sense to me. Where did you hear this? On a telenovela?
