When looking for "cíao" (I don't know if the accent is correctly placed) all I could find is chao and other variations.

Why the sudden change?

Last year I was able to use cíao!

In Spanish the italian expression ciao is used as "chao". Some countries use "chau"

but i've seen in spanish ciao before. Why? - sora62896, Oct 24, 2011
It is a "Romany " word so the spelling is anybody's. - ray76, Oct 24, 2011
If you have heard cíao in Spanish, it is just because the speaker or writter wants to cound "chick" Spanish is well known for been written just the way it sounds, therefore, the perfect writing in Spanish is "chao" Cíao is absolutely Italian - farallon7, Oct 25, 2011
Yea, I've seen it written like that by people (Spanish-speakers) plenty of times - Goldie_Miel, Oct 25, 2011
Then, believe me, it is incorrect! The equivalent to cíao in Spanish, MUST be "chao" there is no other way around if you want to write perfect Spanish. - farallon7, Oct 26, 2011

I am not really sure how it came to be that you were able to find "ciao" in the dictionary. I'd say that if it was there, it probably was a mistake. The correct word in Spanish, as pointed out by Farallon, is Chao. Chau is also used informally.

"Ciao", again as correctly pointed out by Farallon, is the Italian spelling of the expression.
