apaisarse translation

Question

Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone had a translation for 'apaisarse'. I know that apaisado is 'oblong' but just wondered if the verb had the same connotation or not.

I have a translation that includes this word, but in an unusual context:

"La iglesia se apaisaba, dejaba de girar."

Could anyone help me out?

Hi leitchman!

Technically, the verb "apaisarse" doen't exist in Spanish. That choice of words reminds to literary license (poetry, perhaphs?) , that every person who knows what "apaisado"means could easily understand.

The church got/became/turned into oblong...

I can't figure out what this has to do with the next bit, dejaba de girar. Yes, I guess I would need more context, or I'll have to admit this is just poetry.

I don't know what the writer means, but, anyway, it doesn't sound bad.

yes it is quite poetic. it is carmen martín gaite, writing in 1958, about a girl who goes to confession. I will just write what i think and will report back when i get the answer from the professor! thanks! - leitchman, Oct 23, 2011

I don't think apaisar has a pronominal form. It means to place an oblong rectangular form in landscape orientation.
