El odio

hatred, hate

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted November 22, 2011.

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

Stay tuned for the last post, and we will tell you which are the two chosen posts - the most voted, and the one chosen by the moderators.

My Example:

Tengo odio hacia situaciones incómodas, como cuando mi novia me dijo “no” después de haberle/ que le hubiera formulado una propuesta muy importante. ¡Qué triste!

Same subject, so haberle, however, it would be weird to only say haber...as then we would not know who , you are the noviawink So que le hubiera...is also acceptable.

I hate uncomfortable situations, like when my girlfriend told me “no” after I had made a very important proposal. How sad!

two mistakes, so go find them;) one silly mistakes, the other one...I opened a thread on this recently for practice;) - 00494d19, Oct 23, 2011
Chris, she didn't say "No". She said "After you pass the exam!" :) So, all you need is more practice!!! Buena suerte, amigo! - PrincessMariam, Oct 23, 2011
jeje Princess - tienes razón...jejeje - necesito practicar más, y entonces tal vez ella diga sí la próxima vez...jejeje - 001a2987, Oct 23, 2011
Pues, Heidi...I will guess that my silly mistake was omitting the personal -a-, like I did in Ray's correction...and the other - haber should be in the subjunctive, like in your thread - lo que me molesta es...ojalá tenga razón.... :) ...y gracias! :) - 001a2987, Oct 23, 2011
Check your gender matching and remember that you only use a personal "a" for an object, not for a subject. (hopefully I do not get in trouble for saying this). :-) - Stadt, Oct 23, 2011
jeje - gracias Stadt.... :) - 001a2987, Oct 23, 2011
jeje, good tips stadt...;) - 00494d19, Oct 23, 2011

Both love and hate are very strong feelings, but one makes you happy and the other one makes you bad.

Hi Princess. I'm not sure whether 'poor' is the best word to use here. 'sad' or maybe 'bad'? - billygoat, Oct 23, 2011
Princess, try "sad" or "upset" instead of "poor". Other than that, your English is perfect!!!!!!! :) - SonrisaDelSol, Oct 23, 2011

Hate is directed towards another person but ends up affecting the one who hates.

El odio es dirgido a otra persona pero termina por afectar al que odia.

very nice luz, it should be "al que odia", nice katy - 00494d19, Oct 23, 2011
I wondered how to put the pieces together... thanks. And 'es' is correct here? If I had put 'ha dirigido' what would the equivalent be in English? - katydew, Oct 23, 2011
So true. - SusanaEspana, Oct 23, 2011
very good! - billygoat, Oct 23, 2011
..."ha dirigido" would translate "has directed" (Present Perfect)...it wouldn't fit the context of your sentence, as it requires passive... - luz_72, Oct 24, 2011

El amor y el odio son las dos caras de la misma moneda.

Love and hate are the two sides of the same coin.

Con el amor el corazón puede florecer, pero con el odio lo convierte en una piedra.

With love the heart can flourish, but with hate it becomes a stone.

It is not a hate but probably hopelessness when my dog behaves badly and then looks at me with innocent eyes. He knows that I'll never beat him.

No es un odio pero probablemente desesperación cuando mi perro se porta mal y entonces me mira con ojos inocentes. Sabe que no voy a golpearle nunca.

Hola, Sonrisa! Que tal,amiga? :) - PrincessMariam, Oct 23, 2011
HI sorisa, well, visión is not incorrect, but to say: Ver el odio me espanta. ...would be more colloquial, disgustar is softer, I dont like... - 00494d19, Oct 23, 2011

Proverbs 12:1

La biblia dice si alugien ama disciplina ellos ama conocimiento, pero si alugien odia corrección ellos son estúpido.

The bible says if someone loves discipline the love knowledge, but if someone hats correction they are stupid.
