I just finished my lesson on foods (Lesson 1.3) and noticed something that I am confused on. why is it "el agua" and "la carne" when agua (ending in a) is feminine and carne (ending in e) is masculine?

There are hundreds of questions about this on the forum.

Not all words that end in -a are feminine, and not all words that end in -o are masculine. (La mano, for instance.). And for words that don't end in either, you have to learn which is which, although there are common patterns.

However agua actually is feminine. However spanish words beginning with "a" or the same sound use la, not el, as the definite article when they are singular, so the "a" sounds don't run together.

El agua, las aguas

El hache, las haches.
