I asked him to come...¿Le pregunté que viniera?

Hi, guys. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it incorrect to translate "I asked him to come" as "Le pregunté que viniera"? I could've sworn that "preguntar" is a term you use with well, questions or indirect questions or interrogative constructions, like:

Le pregunté acerca de su nuevo perro.

Le pregunté por su madre.

Le pregunté si quería venir.

Le pregunté si deseaba venir.

Le pregunté si podía venir.

Le pregunté cuál sería el precio.

Le pregunté cómo había llegado.

Le pregunté cuándo volvería.

Quiero preguntarte algo: ¿me quieres?

But certainly not in constructions like these:

Le pregunté que viniera. (Shouldn't it be "Le pedí que viniera"?)

Pregúntale que te preste el carro. ("Pídele/Dile que te preste el carro"?)

Me preguntó que lo acompañara.("Me pidió que lo acompañara"?)

Am I imagining things? I keep reading essays from classmates of mine, which use "preguntar" in the way I have always thought to be wrong, but my professors never correct them (This is a translation class) What's going on?

Since you are making a request, you need to used a form of "pedir", which means "to ask" in the sense of a request.

Le pedí que viniera. - I asked him to come, I requested that he come.
