querer + verb and in the past?

Question

Ok I'm reading don Juan tenorio for my Spanish class and I came upon "yo idolatro a doña Inés l, nos la quiso conceder para enderezar mis pasos por el sendero del bien" I'm so confused as to why querer is in the past when it should be in the present to me, and if you want someone to do somethin in Spanish shouldn't it be "querer Que"?

Looks like "I idolize Donna Inés, she made it possible for us to straighten out my bad ways (straighten out my steps), and head towards the path of goodness."

Why "nos" I don't know and then "mis" I don't know why he is mixing pronouns. And maybe I have it wrong.

Edit: now that I see it actually says:

yo idolatro a doña Inés, persuadido de que el cielo nos la quiso conceder para enderezar mis pasos por el sendero del bien

I would say:

I idolize Donna Inés, she persuaded the sky to give way to us....to straighten me out (straighten out my steps), for the path of goodness."
