Tropezar vs trompezar ??????

So I was corrected today to say "Espero que se trompiece y se muera" from "espero que se tropece y se muera" (oops tropezar is a splitter, tropieza, tropiece, didn't know that")

Still instead of

Espero que se tropiece

they said to say

Espero que se trompiece because the way with the m is better and less formal. This from Maria who is very knowledgeable. She says the tropezar way works good for formal and trompezar for less formal. Our dictionary doesn't list trompezar. What do you think?

Gracias.

Well, this is the first time I am reading "trompezar". So, I guess it's colloquial or regional. - 00a4c226, Oct 14, 2011

Hi, Jeezzle!

Hmm, Google was showing me results for "tropezar" instead of "trompezar", so that's odd.

Here's what I could find for trompezar:

I think Maria is just playing with you or making up an idiom. I have never heard the word "Trompezar," but more importantly, neither has the RAE.

Maria doesn't do that. She is extremely serious person and she would never "screw with" my learning or teach me something wrong. - jeezzle, Oct 14, 2011
Looking around I see the Collins dictionary has it, and says "trompezar -------> tropezar" I wonder if it's colloquial or regional? I also found a facebook page that says "Yo tambien digo trompezar en vez de tropezar" so that's wierd. - jeezzle, Oct 14, 2011

While I certainly know tropezar is correct, I'm wondering if trompezar is a Mexican regionalism. We were just talking today about how so many cities say different things and different ways and I was like, How does everyone understand each other?
