In the blank, should it be por or para? I'm not quite sure... but I'm thinking para.

I would say neither, expiar means "to atone for" just like buscar means "to look for".

I'd say "expiar por los pecados" because it's similar to money...you give one thing in exchange for another.

It should be por, because you atone for the sake of (por) the sins.
