Why use De la instead of Del

Why use De la instead of Del

Hello I am confused. Why do you use de la sometimes like "debajo de la casa" and other times "encima del coche". They both mean the same, so why does it matter what you use? I am working through the course using Rosetta Stone. Thanks

De el = del

de la = de la

a el = al

a la = a la

There is a reference section on this website too, click "more" on the top and then go down to reference, you're going to need a lot of grammar support if you're using Rosetta Stone. If you go to "learn Spanish" here you'll find video lessons as well.

Hola Rabbitwho, I understand, is it to do with the male and female tense in the sentences? - comtech2000, Oct 12, 2011
Not the male/female "tense", but simply the gender of the noun that follows. - Azabache, Oct 12, 2011
