El afán

hard work, eagerness, effort, desire

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted November 10, 2011.

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

Stay tuned for the last post, and we will tell you which are the two chosen posts - the most voted, and the one chosen by the moderators.

My Example:

Creo que si pones mucho afán en algo, puedes lograr cualquier cosa.

I believe that if you put a lot of effort into something, you can accomplish anything.

Me frustró cuando el afán de mucha gente fue destruido por la minoría.

La mayoría de la gente aquí no tiene ninguna idea cuanto afán que esté involucrado en la preparación de este hilo.

My really messed up version, I should give it up.: Más de la gente aquí tienen no idea cuantos afán que implicado en la preparación de este hilo.

Most of the people here have no idea how much hard work is involved in the preparation of this thread.

The hard work for babies is their cry when they want to tell their parents - "ok, I want to achieve my goal - to grow up and be strong, don't forget to feed me".

El afán de los bebés es sus lloro llantos cuando quieren decir a sus padres esto - "vale, quiero alcanzar mi objetivo - crecer y sea ser fuerte, no se olviden de alimentarme".

Sometimes showing too much eagerness can make it harder to reach your goals.

A veces revelar demasiado afán puede hacerlo más difícil para alcanzar tus metas.

Wow nice challenging sentence..You can do this two ways: 1. puede hacerLO más dificíl or 2. puede hacer más difícil "el alcance de" tus metas. - drvicente, Oct 11, 2011
¡Gracias, Vicente! I meant to use "hacerlo", but slipped up. Thank you for the useful alternative!!! - pesta, Oct 11, 2011

Normalmente no puedes tener el éxito sin el afán, pero desgraciadamente el afán no es siempre suficiente.

Normally you can’t have success without effort, but unfortunately effort is not always enough.

@RosaVerde- I think that would be another valid (and possibly more common) way of expressing the concept- I chose the more informal, personal way to sound a little less like a platitude. - Stadt, Oct 11, 2011
Ok, just checking to see if my Spanish is ok! Nice way to make it more personal. =) - RosaVerde, Oct 11, 2011

Una vez dos ranas cayeron en la leche. Una de los dos se tumbaba y se ahogó. La otra empezó saltar, y siguió dar saltos hasta que la leche se transformó en crema batida y entonces pudo salir. Ese afán es mi modelo

Once two frogs had fallen into the milk . One of them streched himself out and drowned. The other started to jump and jumped around, till the milk transformed to cream and he could to go out. This effort is my role model.

Eagerness is a good quality as long as it does not finish end in desperation.

El afán es una buena cualidad siempre y cuando no culmine en deseperación.
