Please be more careful correcting your posts on daily threads!

HI everybodygrin

I would really appreciate you to double check on your own post if you have corrected the post according to the correctors suggestions.

I had this happen all the time when I was correcting the thread. One day I simply said "check word of the day" seven times (!!) as even the very word of the day was not correctly spelled.

Some people seem to think a corrector MUST correct typos, accents, grammar...why bother pass a spell check? And why bother to go over the sentence again once you have supposedly corrected it...as there always seems to be a mistake hidden somewhere.

I would just like this to be a reminder for everybody to CHECK their posts for corrections and pass a spell check BEFORE the sentence is submitted.

I will post what one of the correctors said to me very recently:

I just wish the participants in the thread were more attentive. Some don't look at corrections carefully and don't completely correct their phrases so I end up sending them a second or third reminder to go back, review and make corrections. That is very time consuming!

I know this does not apply to many of you, but to those it does, are you actually aware of how long it takes to correct a thread?

Jenny was telling me last night she usually actually passed the sentences through a spell check before even starting to correct them, when she was doing the corrections. It usually took her like three minutes to correct each sentence, ONE HOUR to do the thread...

What happened? snake She burnt out and we all lost with her leaving both threads which she had done masterfully for almost a year.

It just won't do to say, hey, that is a typo!

Please remember that correcting is an extremely time consuming issue and so far all correctors have burnt out...Jenny, Marianne, Cogumela, only to mention a few.

So please pass the spell check before submitting and correct your posts!

Oh! Now I have to admit I am really surprised! I thought that the use of a program to check the spelling was forbidden on those threads just as the use of the translator is.

First, because I want to learn how to spell words correctly (in both languages) without the help of any program, and second, because those programs are far from being perfect.

I would like to clarify that I didn't get burnt out correcting those threads, but it's true that they are very time consuming. I'd encourage everybody to strive our spelling and punctuation as much as possible, but mispellings are very common, and unavoidable most of the times, so patience is needed. I've always thought that if everybody edited the posts that have been corrected and still have tiny mispellings, a lot of work from the correctors would be saved, and it would be very helpful for all of us.

The more times you see a mispelling, the more likely you will make it.

Thank you for the thread Heidi, this is a very big problem.

The correctors dedicate their time to helping us, we give our best attempt at getting the sentences correct, and then the corrector goes back through and makes the corrections - we need to learn as much as we can from these corrections.

Ideas for spell check? I have never tried the program that RabbitWho suggested, I am sure that it would be good. What I do is type my sentences into MS Word. Of course, we all know that it has an English spell-check, but you can easily add to your spell-check Spanish, so anything that is typed that is not recognized will be highlighted.

Just a suggestion....

That's a good idea, Google Chrome has a spell check and you can change the language under tools. - MaryMcc, Oct 11, 2011
Hee hee people still use MS word? http://www.libreoffice.org/download < Free + compatible. - rabbitwho, Oct 11, 2011
jeje - I have never tried that program - maybe I will look into it - Word came free on my computer, and I use it every day at work so I've never thought about options.... :) - 001a2987, Oct 11, 2011
I doubt it came free on your computer, more likely it was included in the price! It's so difficult to find a computer without microsoft programs, and they can be responsible for up to a third of the cost! - rabbitwho, Oct 11, 2011

Typos in the original sentence don't bother me as much as when someone does not properly correct their sentence. I make the effort to point out missing (or superfluous) accent marks. For example: víspera [accent on the "i"]. Especially with the "i" because the accent mark is more difficult to see. Nevertheless, people still miss some of my corrections to the point of omitting entire words. The problem isn't just with spelling errors. grin Also, sometimes people will make all of my corrections, only to introduce another error into their sentence. big surprise

Mistakes are unavoidable, but I suggest copying and pasting the corrector's corrections below your original sentence and methodically go through and fix your original. Hopefully, that will cut down on errors and save us correctors some valuable time.

PS. By the way, I only vote for posts who have made the corrections properly. This helps me cut down on time, and I can quickly see who has yet to make their corrections (or made them improperly). So it pays to be careful with what you type! cheese

Gintar: excellent ideas! This is what I have always done here ...copied and pasted the correctors corrections immediately below my captions so that I can meticulously correct all errors I hope that I don't miss anything.| - FELIZ77, Oct 11, 2011
I actually left one in once and didn't notice till the next day that it was pasted in the middle. - Stadt, Oct 11, 2011

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/

Built in spell-checkers for firefox. Some people are afraid to use this because they think it will make them lazy, but believe me instant correction works really well at getting your brain to absorb the correct spelling. It's the reason I can write pretty much like anyone else now despite having dyslexia!

This is a good message for us, thanks Heidi. I will check double check my genders I will double check my genders I will double check my genders. I'm sorry for all the frustration I've probably caused, you have no idea how much the threads have helped me! I don't think I'd be where I am without them.

thanks rabbit, I am sure many will not like it...but this is absolutely necessary, all correctors burn out! - 00494d19, Oct 11, 2011
With Opera you can add a spell-check just by right clicking in a text field, ticking check spelling in the box that apppears and then going to dictionaries and add/remove - rabbitwho, Oct 11, 2011
This is good to know rabbit. I always use opera with spanishdict. Thanks. - teasip, Oct 11, 2011

First, because I want to learn how to spell words correctly (in both languages) without the help of any program, and second, because those programs are far from being perfect.

Spelling mistakes and typos are in my opinion unavoidable. I always pass the spell checker and still have some typos, and trust me, I know exactly what I want to type in both languages and know how to spell the word, but it is just....what can I say, often it is a typing problem, not a spelling mistake.

The use of a spell checker is morally mandatory, not only allowed, as this helps both the corrector and the poster. Typos cannot be considered a "mistake" as such and correctors cannot be expected to correct typos.

As I said before, I think it was the word "víspera", about half the members had not typed in the accent...was that a "mistake", well, no, it was probably being careless. But if these members had passed a spell check , this would not have happened. wink

Hee hee! As I said, spell checkers actually teach you how to spell, I can't see any reason not to use them unless you think the slower and more difficult way to do something is always the best way. - rabbitwho, Oct 11, 2011

I think purely out of respect to the correctors, one should put significantly more effort into one’s post than the reviewer has to. I always spend quite a bit time on my sentence, review the relevant grammar points where I think I need to, review the dictionary for spelling, gender, shades of meaning, etc., and re-read it over and over (even after I post it). I still manage to make a mess of it sometimes; either because I just miss something I should know, or try to do something that I just don’t know how to do. I actually have learned the most from some of my big disasters. I also occasionally just miss something that is stupid, and I know better. I would like the correctors to know that is not from lack of trying on my part, and if I want to write sentences rapidly without intense scrutiny, I do them in a workbook, not here. I really appreciate everyone’s efforts, and I do not want to take advantage of anyone. I even write in the comments under some of my sentences that I think are more risky that the reviewer should feel free to not correct it and just tell me to go back to something I understand better. I think the value of the service the correctors provide is immense, and I hope everyone will work to make sure that they do not feel that they are being taken advantage of.

PS- I am at an age where I need reading glasses, I will try to be better about putting them on when I do my corrections.

OK, after a little investigation Google Chrome spell checker can fairly easily be changed to Spanish. But as I obviously type in English far more often it is easier to use Chris' idea of typing in Word and using the spell check there, which is easier to swap from one language to another.

Thanks for the tip Chris, at least now correctors won't have my typos to correct as well as the rest of it.

I just had to remind two members to correct their posts...once again and one actually answered back: I did!

And the typo was still there, clearly indicated by the corrector.

Please make sure you correct your posts CAREFULLY!!!

Hey All, I just want to stand in agreement with what Heidita has said and to emphasize that this forum and the focus of having a "palabra del día" is so that you have the opportunity to utilize and improve your language skills in a supportive environment. Where else on the Internet would people be able to come together and acquire such skills like here at SpanishDIct.com? When I correct your sentences, I do it in a very constructive and "learning friendly "way so as not to offend anyone. However, when I notice that certain people do not even bother to go back and make corrections after "several" days this implies to me that you really do not care about improving your skills or learning from your mistakes. Nobody's perfect but the best lessons are learned by the worst blunders...I am definitely a witness to that! Please take these excercise seriously but still have fun learning from them and read your sentences "carefully" so the number of errors is minimized!!! ¡Muchas gracias por todo!

I type dislexic.. I kid you not! But I try to do my best to catch typos. However, I am at work most times and have to do this on the sly! LOL

Another thing I would like to add.... Sometimes it is VERY difficult to understand WHAT the corrections actually ARE! Every person who suggests the corrections does it differently.. and, they are very vague sometimes. I really do get confused as to what I'm suppose to change sometimes. Maybe I'm dense, but I have had that problem often.

Gillygaloo, I'm dense too, I find the format of correctiosn very difficult. I also have to do this in snatches, when time allows. - annierats, Oct 11, 2011
