What do you call emoticons in Spanish?

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a bit older and doesn't really do the texting/chatting thing. I was trying to explain emoticons, but I only knew how to say "emoticons" in Spanish (emoticones), but I didn't know the specific names for the faces. I wasn't even sure what the names were for the most common ones in English.

Can someone help me name these cute little faces?

smile - Smiley face - ¿Carita de sonreír?

wink - Winky face

XD -

raspberry -

- Angry face

etc? What are these faces (and others) called in Spanish and English?

This is not an answer for what you are actually looking for, but gives some ASCII ones names: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticono - Stadt, Oct 10, 2011
Unfortunately, I am blocked at work from almost any site focusing on them, so I cannot search otherwise. :-( - Stadt, Oct 10, 2011

Hi Paralee,

Here is a list of the names for FB emoticons. It might be enough to get you started, at least with the English names.

Hopefully, someone more tech savvy will have a better answer, but I'm wondering if each site like FB, MySpace, etc., has their own individual names.

If you happen to have apple technology, I know that if you pull up the emojis in iMessages on your computer and hover over each one with the mouse, a name for it will pop up in whatever language your computer is set in. As an English speaker trying to learn Spanish I found this very amusing (as my computer is set in Spanish), but I don't actually know if the names are all that practical because I haven't actually looked at what apple named them in English before.

Welcome to SpanishDict. This is an older thread, which is ok, but I doubt they are still interested in answers. Thank you for your answer though. Please take a moment to complete your profile. - rac1, Dec 7, 2015
