They both mean middle school? Growing up i always used colegio as college, but some people say that means high school. I always have referred to high school as la preparatoria. I need help.

Colegio or Primaria is the basic school, Secundaria is the middle school and Preparatoria is high school, Universidad is the college. In Latino America the education is like this

Primaria - 6 years old to 12 yers old Secundaria - 12 to 15 Preparatoria - 15 to 18 University it depends but commonly 18 to 22

The way I learned it, at least in Mexico, is this:

Primary School (Grades 1-6) is la primaria.

La secundaria is middle school, grades 7-9.

High school is la prepatoria, grades 10 - 12.

Colegio is school in general especially in lower grades. In Cria cuervos (Spain) the young kids go of to el colegio at the end of the movie.

La universidad is college or university.

colegio = high school, usually referring to a private school.

secundaria = high school, in general
