Both mean song? what are the differences? How would you use them in a sentence?

Canción is any plain old song.

Canto is technically an epic poem, but it can be used to mean song, as in "nightingale song" - canto del ruiseñor, or "my song": mi canto, or mi canción.

Gekko, lo que dije, no es correcto? - Jeremias, Oct 9, 2011
Si es correcto, Jeremías, sólo quería clarificar un poco más. - Gekkosan, Oct 9, 2011

If you heard a random singing / humming would that be a canto, like a group of carolers or someone humming the theme to the Smurfs?

Gracias.

Yes, that's right. Se escucha el canto de los cantores de villancicos. Es un lindo canto. ¡Me encanta esa canción! - Gekkosan, Oct 9, 2011

The basic word for song is canción. El canto can mean a song but is the basic word for singing.

El canto de las monjas me hizo sentir feliz.

La canción que cantaban me animó.
