DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

This thread is kindly moderated by Heidita. Please correct your posts according to Heidita’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

Stay tuned for the last post, and we will tell you which are the two chosen posts - the most voted, and the one chosen by the moderators.

My Example:

En algunas películas el héroe cabalga hacia el horizonte.

In some movies the hero rides off into the sunset.

I am always there, some distance away, somewhere between land or sea and sky I lay, you may move toward me, yet distant I'll stay.

I am the horizon.

Siempre estoy allí, más alla en la distancia, en algún lugar entre la tierra o el mar y el cielo me hallo, por mucho que intentes acercarme, en la distancia siempre me quedaré.

Soy el horizonte.

Some horizons are beautiful, but for keeping an airplane in line, this type of horizon, the "artificial horizon," can be critical.

When I travel by aeroplane, I always choose a seat near the window so as to watch the horizon.

Cuando viajo en avión, siempre elijo un asiento cerca de la ventana de ventanilla para mirar el horizonte.

Cuando estamos en el mar el horizonte siempre está a trece millas de nosotros.

When we are at sea,the horizon is always 13 miles (away) from us.

Something a little more difficult this time.

En tiempos de gran incertidumbre la gente frecuentemente se da a las fantasías. Durante una de esas épocas el libro El Horizonte Perdido fue escrito, y cuatro años después se hizo una película. - 00494d19, Oct 5, 2011

The horizon is an optical illusion created by the curvature of the earth and thus, in reality, is a place that we will never reach.

El horizonte es una ilusión óptica creado creada por la curvatura de la tierra y por eso, en realidad, es un lugar a lo al que nunca llegaremos.

Gracias, Heidita; I should have done better with the gender matching. I think I need to study "lo que" vs. "el que" a bit more. :-) - Stadt, Oct 5, 2011
Maybe I should also put a limit on how many commas I allow myself in a sentence as well. ;-) - Stadt, Oct 5, 2011
If it weren't an illusion, could I fall off the edge of the earth? - pesta, Oct 5, 2011
Isn't that what people once believed could happen when you reached the end of the earth. :-) - Stadt, Oct 5, 2011
Specific vs. vague referent, I think (here I am referring specifically to lugar). Hopefully I can avoid that mistake again. :-) - Stadt, Oct 5, 2011

Para que hacer una imagen en perspectiva, todas las lineas deben encontrarse en el horizonte. In order to make a picture in perspective, all the lines should meet on the horizon.
