¿Quién es Beltrán?

I was reading through my phonetics text book, and I saw another great saying that goes like this: "Quien bien quiere a Beltrán, bien quiere a su can". I understand it to mean something along the lines of "Love me and love what comes along with me". I was wondering if anybody out there knew anything about the origin of this saying. Who is Beltrán?, What exactly does "can" refer to?, etc.

He could be either the Mexican rock musician Carlos Beltrán or the MLbaseball outfielder for the San Fransisco Giants.
