This is a translation exercise challenge because I don’t know where else to put it.

Dakie has kindly agreed to co-moderate this thread.

The Mosquito Story has 4 versions.

Translation practice into Spanish will benefit us all.

First read “The Mosquito Story” in only the simple present tense. (See below)

(Mire abajo).

Read it as many times as you need to so that you know all the verbs and understand all the vocabulary. Remember it is not enough to read something once or twice; it takes at least 30 times for a word or phrase to become fixed in your brain.

It is NOT necessary to translate the whole story in one go.

I am going to post the other 3 versions of the story if there is sufficient interest.

The Mosquito simple present tense only. (+infinitve)

Section 1. (229 words)

Sleep is impossible. There is a mosquito in the room somewhere. In a nearby garden a dog barks. The mosquito and the dog annoy me.

I close the window to shut out the noise and shut in the mosquito and the heavy night heat is trapped and seems to build up without the refreshing draft of air across my bed.

It, the mosquito, just waits for an off guard moment on my part to attack again. I decide to hunt down the persistent insect; I have nothing else to do because I can’t turn off the light and sleep. When it attacks in the dark it is impossible to see it. I wait for it to settle on my hand or close by. Twice it obliges, once among the hairs on the back of my left hand and the other time, even more conveniently, between the open pages of my book. I raise my right hand slowly, an approach along its blind spot, and then smack to squash the offender. I lift my hand expecting to see its crushed wings and a tiny spot of red pasted to my skin. Nothing. How it escapes I don’t know. I am convinced that it has the ability to see through the back of its head. I wonder if it actually has eyes front and back. It disappears for about 10 minutes.

Section 2. (196 words)

The dog barks and continues its lonely argument with the night. The mosquito returns and lands, without a sound, on a page of my book. I am careful, there is no need to rush. I move the book slightly; the mosquito stays put. The best plan is to slam the book into the bed covers and force the open pages shut and trap the nuisance between them. Outside the dog barks again. I hope he gets a sore throat. How he can bark like that for hours on end is a mystery. I allow the barking to fix itself as a fact of life inside my brain, sleep is impossible even without the mosquito. Bang. It takes no more than a few milliseconds for the book to hit the bed and slam shut. I even manage to remove my thumb from between the pages. Not bad, not bad at all. A perfect plan executed to perfection. I open the book. Again nothing! There are no tell-tale signs of success. At best I frighten it and it is now even more cautious about approaching me. I can not see it but I know it is here somewhere.

Section 3. (286 words)

I no longer want to wait for it to show itself so I look for it. I have to do it quietly, everyone else in the flat, my hosts, are peacefully asleep. A dog that barks does not keep them awake at nights. I have to flush it out and then wait for it to settle on the white walls or on the ceiling. On the white surfaces it stands out like a blemish and there I am able to squash it. Where is it able to hide though? I sit on the bed and watch. I shake the curtains. I try to imagine where it is. There are lots of possible places. It is not much bigger than the head of a matchstick. The possibilities are endless. The chandelier looks like a possible place; the sort of sneaky place a mosquito chooses in order to throw a pursuer off the scent. I stand on the bed and gently rock the delicate glass construction. Success. It flies off in a random pattern around the room. I watch and wait for it to decide where to land. It looks at the bedside lamp then flies off over the wardrobe then across the room towards the window. Each time it makes a manoeuvre that indicates it wants to land. Each time something causes it to abort and look somewhere else. Over to the curtains, up to the ceiling, down to the floor, then out of sight in the darker recesses of the room. It plays a game with me. The dog barks its approval. It disappears and I have no idea where. Is it in the gap in the window frame about to fly out and join the bloody dog?

Section 4 (368 words)

I sit on the bed and look more closely at my bites. I am always careful to cover the upper part of my body before sleeping so the new bites are concentrated on my feet and ankles. They itch like hell. I scratch them; the satisfaction lasts but a few moments before the itching comes back, stronger than before. The special anti insect bite ointment is running low. The dog still has no sign of a sore throat. What to do? I am too tired to read and I switch off the light and cover every part of my body from the soles of my feet to my chin. I know that when I consciously try to do something that normally happens naturally, like falling asleep, it does not happen. The harder I try the more uptight I become with the result that I stay awake. I have absolutely no expectations of falling asleep; the dog ensures that. The buzzing is frantic, almost inside my ear. Smack. I wake up to an early stage of consciousness and to the frantic buzz. Full consciousness follows as the weight of my hand crashes onto the side of my face. I switch on the light and sit up in the bed. The excitement of those few seconds of anticipation clear all cobwebs of sleep from my head. I am fully awake as if never asleep and I unfold my clenched fist and look at the inside of my hand. Success! There it is. Smashed! Flattened! Dead! No More! I lie back on the bed and look up at the ceiling; there is a smile on my face. The dog slows down its barking and I notice a very small blemish on the ceiling. Is it some dust? Part of a cobweb? A scratch mark? I stand up and inspect it more closely. I stretch up on tip toe and it flies off and disappears somewhere over by the wardrobe. It is another mosquito! The dog is silent. I look at the pulverised mosquito still on my hand. A cockerel crows. The sun is now above the horizon; it floods the room with light. Sleep is again impossible. I hate all mosquitos!

The End.

I am going to post the other 3 versions of the story if there is sufficient interest.

Later I will post the "full" story for translation using all verb forms and Modals. - ian-hill, Sep 30, 2011

Nada. ¿Cómo escapa? no sé.

Very very good job, I changed some things that you did on your own just to follow the translation literally, and make a kind of "standard translation", other than that, you did an awesome work, keep working hard, many of these mistakes were typos.

Hi DAkie! Thank you so much! :) Oblige = do what I want, it's a bit formal and usually used sarcastically in modern speech such as "Would you oblige me so much as to take your god **** feet down off the table!" - rabbitwho, Sep 30, 2011
So in other words 2 times the mosquito does exactly what I want for me. - rabbitwho, Sep 30, 2011
Thanks Dakie - I hope we get some more - this is only the 1st of 4 posts for this story.. - ian-hill, Sep 30, 2011
