Why not just ask them "Where do you live?" I think that is translated as "¿Dónde vive usted?" But I could be wrong.. I'm a beginner.

So if I ask a customer ¿Dónde vive usted? It would not be abrupt or rude or accusing? I don't want someone thinking I am questioning their immigration status. Would it be polite and correct to say ¿Dónde vive usted por favor?

Anytime you say "please" it is better, I would think. - Gillygaloo, Sep 29, 2011

So to make this sound like a question do I say the "por favor" in a higher octave like you would in English or do they know it is a questions since I am starting the sentence with Donde? - AnaCook, Sep 29, 2011

It is funny but in this case I would rather use ¿De donde es usted? Where are you from rather than where do you live, no?

My 2 cents, I am also no expert.

I would rather say De donde es usted? But to get a zip code (needed to start the transaction) for the Texas city or special code for Mexico. I live in Texas but I am "from" Wisconsin. So, for me when someone asks me where are you from I will say WI - AnaCook, Sep 29, 2011

So I will say :Me encantaría ayudarle con su compra.

Is this form of a question too abrupt or rude? I work in retail and need to be friendly. ¿Dónde vive usted? Would make things simpler but at the same time I do not want my customers to feel like they are being interrogated.

If you use the usted form, as above, you are being quite polite. - MaryMcc, Sep 29, 2011
