How would you politely ask a stranger where they live?
Do you live in Mexico or Texas? Do you live in Monterrey?

Why not just ask them "Where do you live?" I think that is translated as "¿Dónde vive usted?" But I could be wrong.. I'm a beginner.
So if I ask a customer ¿Dónde vive usted? It would not be abrupt or rude or accusing? I don't want someone thinking I am questioning their immigration status. Would it be polite and correct to say ¿Dónde vive usted por favor?
For now I will ask : ¿Dónde vive usted por favor ?
It is funny but in this case I would rather use ¿De donde es usted? Where are you from rather than where do you live, no?
My 2 cents, I am also no expert.
Is this form of a question too abrupt or rude? I work in retail and need to be friendly. ¿Dónde vive usted? Would make things simpler but at the same time I do not want my customers to feel like they are being interrogated.
