Acceder

to agree to something, to consent; to agree to do something; to access

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted October 29, 2011.

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

This thread is kindly moderated by Heidita. Please correct your posts according to Heidita’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

Stay tuned for the last post, and we will tell you which are the two chosen posts - the most voted, and the one chosen by the moderators.

My Example:

He visto que es muy difícil encontrar a alguien que acceda a corregir los hilos – por eso, deberíamos estar agradecidos a estas personas, y darles las “gracias"

I have found that it is very hard to find someone that will agree to correct the threads, therefore, we should be grateful for these people, and say “thanks” to them.

I am continuously amazed at the dedication of those who correct these posts day in and day out; I have wondered if we were able to find enough volunteers whether the days of week could be split up among more than one person. :-) - Stadt, Sep 29, 2011
To help prevent burnout, which we see on a regular basis. They really deserve recognition for their efforts. :-) - Stadt, Sep 29, 2011

Normalmente, cuando mi esposa y yo no estamos de acuerdo, accedo a sus deseos, pero no he accedido todavía a su deseo de que deje de tratar de aprender a hablar español y “habla conmigo en mi idioma” hablar con ella en su idioma.

Normalmente, cuando mi esposa y yo no estamos de acuerdo accedo a sus deseos, pero no he accedido todavía a su deseo DE que deje de tratar de aprender a hablar español y “hablaR con ella en su idioma"

Normally, when my wife and I don’t agree, I give in to her wishes, but I have not given in as yet to her desire that I quit trying to learn to speak Spanish and “speak to me in my language” speak to her in her language.

Era un poco raro, stadt...pero bueno, he intentado de ponerlo más claro - 00494d19, Sep 29, 2011
Yes, it is does sound strange to switch mid sentence into a direct quote. I couldn't quite figure out if I did it the way you did whether I needed "hablar" or "hable". Thank you. :-) - Stadt, Sep 29, 2011
Now that I see how you did it, it does make a lot of sense to take the phrase off the other "hablar" and not off the "deje" (sorry for not knowing how to say that in proper grammatical terms). :-) - Stadt, Sep 29, 2011

After Heidi's corrections:

To consent is not the same as to give up . . . .

Acceder no es lo mismo que ceder . . . . .

Original caption:

Si se accede, eso no significa necesariamente que se ceda . . . . .

If you consent, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you give up . . . . .

Si su esposa le diga "¿no me parece gorda, es verdad?" siempre acceda con ella. Decir de otra manera ¡se creará problemas!

If your wife says to you "I don't look fat, do I?" always agree with her. To say otherwise will cause you problems!

Yo les dije que si acceden alimentar la tortuga y mantener su “casa” limpia, entonces pueden tenerlo.

I told them that if they agree to feed the turtle and keep his "house" clean, then they can keep it.
