I've heard:

  • Nana (by far the most common)
  • Mamita
  • Yaya
  • Nona (yes, a derivative of the Italian nonna)
  • Abueli/güeli and other variations

There are many, many more. Just like in English when the family agrees on a name for each grandmother, the same is true in Spanish. It's a matter of what you would like to be called.

Your title can even be derived from your given name. Say, for example, a woman is named Lourdes. Her nickname might be Lulú, and eventually when she has grandchildren, they might end up calling her Lulú, too.

Nana is a maid for Chileans, at least in Santiago. - tc84, Sep 28, 2011

Welcome to the forum!

The word for "grandmother" is "abuela", but a native speaker can offer more alternatives. There are more endearing terms used in English, and Spanish probably has similar applications. "Abuelita" is one. "Nanaya" is another.
