¿Algún o cualquier?

I know depending on context ¨algún¨ can mean either some or any. ¨Cualquier¨ also means any. Help me understand when each one is more appropriate to use? Thanks!

I've always thought of cualquier as meaning more like "whichever" or "whatever", whereas algún means more like "any" or "some".
To quote the dictionary here:
Cualquier hombre de los de aquí -> any man from these parts
Algún pobre anciano -> some poor old man

Cualquier día = whatever day, whichever day
Algún día = someday
