"ambos" and "los dos"

How do you use "ambos" and "los dos"? Is there a difference between them?

Ambos is a plural adjective: ambos niños llegaron.
Or
a Plural pronoun.
Ambos fueron.
Los dos is principally used as a noun used exactly like the pronoun ambos.
So really, they are pretty close, but ambos has a secondary use.
