Here are the preterite forms of "ser" and "ir":

Preterite Forms of "Ser" and "Ir"

Yo Fui Fui
Fuiste Fuiste
Él, Ella, Usted Fue Fue
Nosotros Fuimos Fuimos
Vos Fuisteis Fuisteis
Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes Fueron Fueron

As you see in the table, the conjugations are the same for both the verbs.
How then do you identify which verb is being used?
The answer to this question is found in the context or the subject matter and the way the verb is understood,
Consider these two examples:

Paco fue al juego. Paco went to the game.
El juego fue al estadio anoche, The game was at the arena last evening.

In the first example, it would not make sense to think that Paco "was (past tense of to be) the game". In the second, it would not make sense to think that the game "went (past tense of to go) to the arena". In both cases, the context or logical understanding identifies the verb being used.

Did you mean to ask "How is ser and ir used in the preterite form?" You can also go to the conjugation tool which is under the heading More on the toolbar above.
