"Accepting" answers
qfreed recently commented on a question/remark of mine in regard to "accepting" answers. He/she said "Personally speaking I usually find it hard to accept an answer because there are usually several that I consider of special merit. To accept one seems to overlook the others." I see the point, but was a little surprised to see that qfreed's perspective was that you could "accept" only one answer. I had been thinking that it was possible that several could be "acceptable." My question is, is there a rule on this, or is "accepting" up to the acceptee? Again, I am simply trying to understand how the forum works. Thanks again, qfreed.
What are the thoughts on this? Does an answer need to be UNIQUELY acceptable to be accepted, or can you "like" several. I ask because some answers I see to others questions, I reject outright. Others I think are pretty good and "acceptable," and others absolutely on the button. Depends a lot on the nature of the question.

You accept answers when you feel that that answer successfully answers and explains the reasoning to your question.
The thing about accepting an answer is that a check mark appears on the main forum page indicating that it has been accepted. Usually what happens is the post will get passed over because everyone figures it has already been answered. If you want to get the best response out of a question you should wait a while before accepting one.
He's talking about clicking the 'accept' tab on a particular answer - which only the person who started the thread can do - then the answer you've chosen gets highlighted in blue and the person who answered gets, I think, 20 points added to their point total.
Of course every answer that you vote for gets ten points anyway so there's not a huge difference. If you are worried about offending others whose answers you haven't chosen as 'the best answer' you could always comment underneath that you appreciated all (or whichever) of the answers given but chose that particular one because it embodied all of the most useful points or whatever reason you have lol. But I don't think anyone worries too much!
