This thread is kindly moderated by Heidita. Please correct your posts according to Heidita’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

Stay tuned for the last post, and we will tell you which are the two chosen posts - the most voted, and the one chosen by the moderators.

My Example:

Alguna gente vive en soledad aun cuando alrededor de ellos hay un montón de gente.

Some people live in loneliness, even when they are around a lot of people.

Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone and solitude expresses the glory of being alone. Paul Tillich

La soledad expresa el dolor de sentirse solo y la solitud expresa la gloria de estar solo.

I deliberately chose this quote because in English loneliness is negative where as solitude is not. How could this be expressed in Spanish?

"An old man crying in the corner . his love has left him alone to morn, the loss of caring sharing knowing, All that was between them is gone, he is left to walk forever now with heavy lonely footsteps in the dark." - ray76, Sep 21, 2011
That's really sad. Then you think of people like Johnny Cash who died soon after their partners. The highest suicide rates are amoung the elderly though we don't often realize it. - rabbitwho, Sep 21, 2011
I live alone , mostly it is great until one gets ill then one knows what loneliness is , not necessarily bad but it is there your only companion. - ray76, Sep 21, 2011

Some rabbits deserve to be lonely, while we enjoy being in the company of others [such as RabbitWho].

Algunos conejos merecen ser solitarios, mientras nosotros que disfrutamos de estar en la compañía de otros [tales como la señora Rabbit-Who(¿)]. wink

Hola guys, just a little clarification...

While English clearly distinguishes loneliness ( being alone and sad because one has no people or friends to talk to) from solitude (enjoying having some time alone or on one's own), it seems that in Spanish the differentiation is kind of lost, so...

Soledad = falta de compañía

  • (voluntaria) solitude - le gusta trabajar en la soledad de su habitación --> ·he likes working in the solitude of his room.

  • (involuntaria) loneliness: tengo miedo a la soledad ---> I have a fear of loneliness.

The context plays a vital role when dealing with this word.

Here one has to remember the great novel 'Cien años de soledad' by Gabriel García Márquez, which is translated into English as 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'.

Always do what is right and truthful. At first, you will experience loneliness, but others will soon follow.

Siempre haz lo que está bien y verídico verdadero. Al principio experimentarás la soledad, pero otros seguirán pronto.

La soledad tiene más que ver con nuestro estado de ánimo que con la cantidad de gente que nos rodea; no es tan difícil estar sólo en una multitud...

The loneliness has to do with our state of mind rather than the quantity of people that surround us; it's not so hard to be alone in the crowd...

First try:

Solitude is as necessary for our creative spirits to develop and flourish as are sleep and food for our bodies to survive.

Sarah Ban Breathnach

La soledad es como necesario para nuestras espíritus creativas desarrollar y florecer como son el sueño y la comida para nuestros cuerpos a sobrevivir.

Try again:

Solitude is freedom because to be alone with your thoughts is to owe no one.

El solidad es libertad porque estar solo con sus pensamientos es deber nadie.

I think people enjoy solitude at times, but no one likes to be alone all the time.

Creo que las personas disfrutan de la soledad a veces, pero a nadie le gusta estar solo todo el tiempo.
