"basarse" vs "basar"

Why is a reflexive form (basarse) needed? "They were chosen based on their skill level" for example. The example I saw used "basándose" here; why not just basando?

gracias chileno. & I assume here "basandose" means "based/(ing) on their opinion" where "...se" is the object pronoun for the phrase "...on their opinion"? - t8805jg, Sep 19, 2011

They were chosen based on their skill level = (Ellos) fueron elegidos basado en/por su nivel de destrezas/habilidades.

Many will avoid this phrase in Spanish and use "basándose".

If they use "basando" it would be necessary to add "su opinión" or something like that...and would make the phrase very ambiguous.
