Does "en casa" = el hogar

In Cuba I hear frequently comments such as voy en casa ..... siento feliz en casa .... it seems to be used as "in home", "at home" or just "home". Hogar is rarely used.

I guess the use of "hogar" is regional, although I have no doubts that everyone recognizes it.

Now, hogar besides meaning house it also means the place where cinders remain or are formed, like in the chimney or a wood/coal kitchen/oven/stove.

"In my house we eat bread everyday" although understandable it is better to say "at home we eat bread..."

home = hogar

House casa

In Chile we prefer to talk about our houses, meaning homes. smile

In Spain we use always "casa".

Hogar is rarely used here.

I´ll just add this.

Hogar is usually " home" where "casa" is house.

Uses can vary .

Gracias para las respuestas. Pero, quiero saber también que es común decir sencillamente "en casa" .... descansaré en casa .... sin "la" o "mi" como: descansaré en la casa o descansaré en mi casa. ¿Me entiende?

I have heard both ways, and in most every case, si dicen "en casa" va ser la propia casa del hablante, ¿no? - cristalino, Sep 15, 2011

Well, there's an "aha" moment, at least for me.

Until now, I only have associated "hogar" with "home" because I had watched the Televisa program, Ellas Son La Alegría del Hogar.

I never actually looked it up, though, so as to grasp that meaning, but it would seem to place the word somewhere near the concept of "hearth and home" familiar to English speakers. (Well, at least to old-timers such as myself. . . .. wink )

.

"Hearth" is the very word which popped into my mind too! Like the old-fashioned cabins where everything revolved around the hearth! :) - cristalino, Sep 15, 2011
