Salir means coming out but whats the difference between Coming out and Exiting in English?

I know that Estoy saliendo de La Iglesia means I am coming out of the church

but what is the difference between the word coming out and exiting or leaving a place in English?

Both can be verbs "to Leave / to exit"

But "leave" can not be a noun

"One must leave through the exit" - one can not exit through "the leave"

Also one can leave a place, a person or a situation but one can not use "exit".

I am leaving Bolivia.

I am leaving you.

I am leaving this horrible job.

To exit and to leave are really quite synonymous in English.

You can exit a building, or a situation, or leave it.

There are differences however.

You can say, "I am leaving this behind me", but you cannot say "I am exiting this behind me."

That is because the verb to exit means "to go out of a place or situation, or to make an exit.

Whereas to leave can mean to go away from a place or situation, but it can also mean to go away and allow something or someone to remain.
