How to say "I'm sorry"

I need to say that I'm sorry for something that happened. They speak spanish and english but I think it would mean more to them if it was in spanish.

If you are simply saying sorry or I am very sorry and leaving it at that : lo siento o lo siento mucho (respectively) will suffice.

However, if you would like to add more eg ''I am sorry about what has happened'' I would recommend that you say:

''Lamento (mucho) lo que occurido o Lamento lo que pasó = I am very sorry about/ I very much regret what has happened''.
