meaning of "junta"

Does anyone know what the phrase "dar junta" or "pedir junta" means? This phrase is in the context of a village chief trying to raise money from the villagers so that they will later be exempt from a tax ("contribucion" and church tax "obvencion'). Here is the complete sentence: "le dijo que diese junta para que el superior gobierno los liberte de pago de contribucion y obvencion."

thanks so much for your help!

Pay money now to avoid paying money later. Sounds like a political solution. - 0074b507, Sep 9, 2011

I have the following sentence, and which I do not understand the meaning of junta in it it

Vi a mi hermana en una tumbona junta a la piscina.

Now I guess it could mean board, but I am not sure

I saw my sister on a board beach seat in the pool.??

The word "junta" can mean board, but in the context of your sentence, it means "poolside". I saw my sister in a deck chair (chaise lounge) at the poolside.

Yes, junta also means together or conjoined. See our dictionary. - 0074b507, Dec 25, 2011

The key to this is the idea of a group uniting with a common purpose in order to achieve a collective goal. Thus: committee", "board", "cooperative", "group" etc. all work in translation depending on context. It isn't definitively a political term but, inevitably, many juntas are formed for political reasons.

I wonder if the word had any other meaning/sense in the 19th Century since that is the time period of the document from which this quote is. From the document it does not look like it is a committee. Thanks to all for your help! - Rajeshwari-Dasgupta, Sep 9, 2011

Is it a committee? I'm a beginner so wait for another answer, I'm just seeing if I am right.

Give the committe or Ask the committee
