el = the (masculine, with a few exceptions is used before words ending in "o")

la = the (feminine, with a few exceptions is used before words ending in "a")

los = the (plural form of el, masculine)

las = the (plural form of la, feminine)

Examples: el perro = the dog

los perros = the dogs

la vaca = the cow

las vacas = the cows

Welcome to the forum, I hope this helps!

While knowing that articles must conform in gender and number is important, one of the things that is difficult to learn about articles is when "not" to use them. - Fredbong, Sep 9, 2011
What about El Mapa? Why do you use El and not La for that? - Sam_Zheng, Feb 22, 2015

Hola Sushi, bienvenidas a SpanishDict.

El, la, los, and las, are all "definite articles." If you want an understanding of when to use them read the article in the link.

You may want to research indefinite articles as well. Knowing when to use those will tell you when not to use definite articles.

Buena suerte.
