I have asked a few people when to use para or por, they all tell me there isnt a concrete rule here... maybe some examples will help me out.

Those you asked don't have a clue about how to use these prepositions. "Por" is the path, and "para" is the end. Going through places, through time, through the reasons to do things,... are all "por", and any destination, recipient, arrival time are "para".

Of course there are some general rules which can help you until you get the ''feeling'' of when to use ''por'' or ''para'' wink

Look at this lesson: por vs para

Por and para in the reference article.

l hope this helps!
