Colgar

to hang (up), to put up; to give up, to abandon, to leave

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

**Work must be done by yourself. This thread is about YOUR ability not the ability of the translator. wink**

This thread is kindly moderated by Heidita. Please correct your posts according to Heidita’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Post your sentences in Spanish and English, then vote for the ones you like. The best answer will be chosen based on number of votes and language correctness.

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 4 lines
• Posts which cannot be understood after they are read three or four times
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.

Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

An upcoming exciting change is soon, the sentence that the winner of the Palabra del Día posts will be used as the example sentence, which is posted on the site, and on Facebook, e-mail, etc. Therefore, a few changes need to be made in order to create sentences that will make sense for this:

Only add ONE picture to your postYour sentence MUST be comprehensible without the picture!

This is actually an exciting change, and I know this will be a little more challenging, but it is great that SpanishDict is going to trust us with creating the sample sentence

My Example:

SpanishDict tiene un montón de miembros, y creo que la mayoría de ellos han colgado sus estudios de español. Sin embargo, yo no pararé hasta dominar el idioma (o me muero de viejo…)

SpanishDict has a lot of members, and I think that the majority of them has abandoned their Spanish studies. However, I will not stop until I master the language (or I die of old age…)

In my country we have an expression to a person who lies to you. We say “don’t hang pasta on my ears”.

En mi país tenemos una expresión a una persona quien te miente. Decimos “no cuelgues pasta en mis orejas”.

It was very nice chatting to you on Skype, but now I’m so tired, I have to hang up because my feet can't go on anymore . . . . . .

Me gustó muchísimo platicar contigo por Skype, pero ahora estoy tan cansado, que tengo que colgar porque mis piernas ya no pueden continuar . . . .

Siempre he pensado que el verbo 'colgar' tiene algo que ver con el teléfono antiguo con que la gente tenía que colgar la pieza del altavoz cuando la llamada había terminado. LOL

I've always thought the verb 'hang up' has something to do with the old telephone set, in which people had to hang up the speaker piece when the call had ended. LOL

Sometimes I think that I put a full stop and it is over. But life has a good eraser and puts a comma instead.

alt text

A veces pienso que colgé un punto y se acabó. Pero la vida tiene un buen borrador y colga una coma en lugar.

El fin de semana que viene, voy a una boda en Eugene. Mientras estoy allá, mi hijastra quiere que cuelgue varias cosas en su pared, porque acaba de mudarse a una nueva casa.

This coming weekend, I am going to a wedding in Eugene. While I am there, my stepdaughter wants me to hang several things on her wall, because she just moved to a new house.
