It comes from the early days of telephones when operators connected all the calls and controlled the ringing of the recipient's phone. So when the recipient picked up the phone, he would say "Bueno" to indicate that the connection had been made, ie: "Ya estuvo bueno, pues he contestado."

In Mexico, people also say "Diga" or simply "Sí."

Apparently people didn't say "Hello" much in English before we got phones. It was a way of calling for attention. But they had to chose between "Hello" and "Ah hoy-hoy" and everybody voted for "Hello" in the end. So it's quite random what we ended up saying. It could have "How are you?" Or "Hey" or "Well?"

Here they say "Digame" a lot, which sounds kind of aggressive to me! But it's very logical. "You obviously called me for a reason, tell me what it was."

Why they specifically chose Bueno in Meixco I have no idea.

In Germany they answer by stating their last name: "Schultz." This is also quite logical but always sounds a little military to me (from US). I'm curious now--are there different ways of answering the phone in other Spanish-speaking countries?

In the Netherlands it is similar, they answer "with Schultz" telling who they reached - elainepnj, Sep 5, 2011
