Why should you become bilingual?

The reasons I would offer you are varied and numerous.

1 To increase your employability

The world market is rapidly changing and people who can only speak one language (often... but not exclusively British people),will be at a distinct disadvantage when applying for work compared withis those who can speak at least two languages/two languages or more. Employers and businesses are now beginning to realize the tremendous potential and value of having employees who can communicate confidently in a global market, speaking two or more languages.

2 To increase your social network and make new friends-

When you can speak at least one other world language you can communicate with so many more people and make new friends ...friends who you may have for life....friends who can help you see the world in a different way.

3 To gain a better understanding of the world in which you live.

When we choose to live and communicate only with those who speak our native language it can send a negative message to the rest of the world. British people have, generally speaking, gained a poor reputation for making an effort to speak other languages and to some extent this has been deserved. An insular attitude can breed arrogance and a refusal to learn another language becuase, of course, ''our langauge is the best''!

4 To remain connected with other people in the world and not become socially cut off

English is still widely spoken around the world but Chinese and Spanish as world languages are challenging English as being the most widely spoken language in the world. People who can only speak English will one day be left behind and miss out on being connected with other people unless they take the challenge to learn at least one other world language.

Just imagine how a deaf person feels when they cannot understand what people around them are saying This is how people will feel when they cannot understand what others are saying to them or communicate with them. ..because they do not speak English but perjhaps Spanish, French or Chinese.

This represents only some of the reasons to learn another language

I hope this helps wink smile grin

As an after -hought, I would challenge people who can only speak one language to think how they feel when someone from another country that does not speak your native language come to live in your country and makes no effort to learn the language of your country. This is how many English Expats live in Spain. I know this is true because I learnt this while chatting with a native Spanish girl who volunteered this information and she told me that their refusal to integrate and make an effort to learn their native language of Spanish causes alot of bad feeling among the natives. She told me this about 5 years ago things may have changed since then but pigs might fly, too lol

More and more opportunities will come on your way if you know how to speak more than 1 language. grin

I don't really need to be bilingual, but I've been speaking English for too long to forget how.

Thank you for sharing this with us Sonrisa.

It reminds me of a time,I was sitting in front of a friends house with a girlfriend and the dog across the street would not stop barking. When I said shut up he barked more. When I said, ¡Callate! we sat in silence. smile

I think the problem is, that you can reach a country , where nobody speaks your four or any number of languages and you are there again deaf and dumb. Therefore would be necessary an international language , and now that is the badly spoken english.

Another reason why I love this video is that nothing is actually spoken. No English, no Spanish, nothing. It is something that everyone, regardless of what their native language is, is capable of understanding!
