Melbourne edges out Vancouver to top most liveable City list. The Australian city of Melbourne has beaten Canada's Vancouver to the title of world's most liveable city for the first time in almost a decade.
Vancouver has topped the annual Global Liveability Survey since 2002, but this year fell to third behind Vienna.
Overall, Australian and Canadian cities did well, capturing seven of the top ten spots.
Harare, Port Moresby and Dhaka occupied the bottom of the table.
The cities were assessed in five categories - stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
Vancouver missed out on the top spot because its infrastructure score had fallen due to periodic closures of a key motorway. Continue reading the main story MOST LIVEABLE CITIES 2011

London was ranked 53, out of 140 cities surveyed. Honolulu, at 26, was the top US city.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, which carried out the survey, said scores in Europe had been pushed slightly down by the eurozone crisis, while the Arab Spring had affected ratings across the Middle East and North Africa.
"Australia, with a low population density and relatively low crime rates, continues to supply some of the world's most liveable cities," report editor Jon Copestake said in a statement.
"Despite the rising cost of living driven by the strong Australian dollar, these cities offer a range of factors to make them highly attractive." Melbourne was a joint winner with Vancouver in 2002.
Mayor Robert Doyle said he was "absolutely delighted" with the news.
''For the first time in a decade we are now officially ranked number one,'' he said. ''When you think the strong Aussie dollar militates against this, this is even more impressive."
Cities were scored out of 100 and the report noted that the top 10 cities were only separated by 1.8 percentage points.

Congratulations Ray!
It seems that you, your parents, or whatever force that brought you to Melbourne have made an amazing choice for you!!!
I have read many articles about this sort of thing over the years. I must say, I think that there are certain qualities that we all seem to be in need of in order to find a place comfortable enough to be called home. However, the great news is, there is something that is intangible or even a few things that are unique to every human being on earth. These are the things special to us, which make any place on earth, a place we desire to call home.
As you have said, Melbourne is in desperate need of more Spanish speaking natives. I think that would be something many of us here in the forum would desire in the place we call "home".
I never cease to be amazed at how different we all are. Some of us love the mountains, the countryside, forests and gardens. Some take comfort in beaches or deserts, palm trees and tropics. Others love to be surrounded by the noise and clamor of urban areas. I think that those differences are so perfect. If we all desired the same things, we would all be living in the same place, which would immediately make it the worst place on earth to live.
So I am so excited and happy that your city has been deemed one of the best places to live. You probably gained quite a few points when they found out you were living there. But wherever you are....learn to enjoy whatever it is that makes the place you live special and unique. It may seem boring or mundane to you at this point, but believe me, wherever you live, it is definitely an exotic and a wonderful place for someone else looking from the outside looking in.
Oi Ray, stop poaching the Spanish speakers!
We need them here too.
(Don't you need extra Poms in Melbourne then?)
My current, or actually ongoing struggle is that I can't decide if I prefer to live here in the hustle and bustle:
or.....somewhere like this with palm trees, white sand and non-stop Spanish...
or even living among and helping the poor in a Spanish speaking country?
Maybe I am just destined to live out of a suitcase!!
Voy a tenerlo en cuenta.
Can non-Spanish speakers come, too
