Latin America Challenge 15
Although the USA has many female politicians and state officials, we have yet to have a woman president. Latin America has had a number of important female leaders, including the very first female president in the Western Hemisphere, Isabel Martínez de Perón. She served as vice president during her husband Juan Perón's third term as president of Argentina. Following his death in office in July of 1974, she served as president until March of 1976. Unfortunately her presidency was marred by controversy and she now lives in exile in Spain.
Today's Challenge: Find other important female leaders from Latin America and tell us about them.
Use whatever resources you have available, but please list only one woman per post. Feel free to post as often as you like.

This was taken directly from wikipedia, as I cannot say that I have any personal opinions attached to her presidency (because I have not studied it enough).
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is the first elected female president of Argentina. One thing that I think is interesting about her is that she is the wife of a former president, and she ran against the wife of another former president.
Isabel Peron was the first woman president in Latin America.
She took over as president of Argentina when her husband - the three-time president Juan Domingo Peron - died in office in 1974.
