Te extraño is more commonly used in Latin America.
In Spain, people say te echo de menos.

I used echar de menos for missing one's hometown in a Spanish class and was told that echar de menos was used more for missing people and extraño was used more missing things.........guess that isn't so?

Te extraño is seldom used in Spain, we use the "te echo de menos" form.

Extraño is written with ñwink
