You want to be "Licenciado" but you don´t know know what this means? Maybe you should learn the meaning first and then decide to what you will be dedicating your life.

Technically, anyone who has a degree in any discipline can be called "Licenciado," but in common usage it is a title for lawyers.

In any of the professions in México after graduation you must take an additional exam to obtain you "title" to practice in that profession.

When you pass that exam you become "licenciado/a". yes it it is most common for attorneys as you are not recognized without the title, but the other professions require it as well.

As stated previously, in general it pertains to lawyers. However, anyone with a degree can be called "licenciado". We really don't have an equivalent term in English, nor a similar custom.

You can also call someone by their job title, like "ingeniero". Watch a couple of movies or telenovelas of people working in professional environments and it won't take you long to get the hang of it.

Ingeniero.

Arquitecto.

Doctor.

Veterinario.

Sicólogo.

Abogado.

Contador.

It is used as a job qualification and means college grad--there are a lot of jobs only open to college grads, just like the US, and there is a corresponding pay difference. People with specific qualifications like lawyer, doctor, or engineer put their title ahead of their name. South America seems to be much more status conscious this way than the US.
