How would you say "could have been". The sentence is: "A part of him died, as did the future that could have been?"

"Could" is "poder" in conditional tense in Spanish, and "have been" is present perfect of "ser". Simply write them exactly like in English.

Would morirse be wrong here as only part of him died? - 0074b507, Aug 28, 2011
Would that indicate that the part that died had some involvement in the dying? - ian-hill, Aug 28, 2011

Could can be "will be able, was able, is able" etc, etc. 'Could' and 'can' are two very ambiguous words.

"A part of him died, as did the future that could have been?"

What is conditional about this sentence?

Or is it the only way that "could" can be expressed in Spanish?
