Does tirar or lanzar mean to throw?

When throwing a tomato , ball or rock do you say tirar or lanzar?

Im always confused between lanzar and tirar? does it depend on country? which is the most common in Mexico for example

Lanzar mean throw, but "Lanzar" is very formal you could say "tirar" is most common.

You can say tirar, lanzar, echar, or arrojar to mean throw in that sense. . .maybe some other words too.
