I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me! ~Dr. Seuss

Hola Jackson! I hope that you will find the words you need to keep on this path of learning Spanish. Participating in the Word of the Day, English Word of the Day, and Picture of the Day helped me. I liked the games, too, because some of them are just a word or two and that built my confidence.

One final quote from Christopher Reeves:

As of this month, I've been studying Spanish for 2 years. I've had many "aha!" moments when things suddenly made sense, and at least as many "duh-huh" moments when I just didn't get it and felt stupid.

Something that has helped me stay motivated is reading in Spanish about topics I am interested in. For example, I am scuba diver and found a great Spanish web site devoted to scuba and underwater photography. Maybe you can find a site or publication like that about one of your interests or hobbies. Or try to read a book you like in English, but in Spanish. I've done this with the Bible, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and others. I hear that many people have success with the Harry Potter books.

The key is doing some Spanish every day, even if it's just a quick look at AOL Noticias for the headlines. If you keep at it, you will make progress.

Don't be too worried if you have difficulty with learning material the first time you look at it. I re-visit things over and over. You get a tremendous kick when you re-visit something that you looked at, say 3 months earlier, but this time you are starting to understand what is being taught!

This has happened to me many times on my Spanish journey. Over the past few days I have been listening to some conversational cds that I threw in the corner 6 months ago because I couldn't understand a word. This time though, things started to make sense. I started to understand the gist of the conversation and could piece together other parts from context. I felt really good afterwards because that was a definite sign of progress.

So, the message is..... hang in there! Don't give up. If something seems confusing, don't worry, just move on to some different learning material, then re-visit the parts you didn't understand further down the line.

Honest, if I am starting to see progress, anybody can!

Buena suerte!

Um... I guess it's awesome to know to different languages and to be able to communicate with people from other countries. You might feel superior then others and that might boost your self-esteem grin

Well, I'm not sure exactly where motivation comes from, but I remember thinking that some of the lessons in learn Spanish 2 were much too difficult or had too much information per lesson. It really gets on my nerves when Ms. Whitmire says "Super fácil, ¿no?" and I shout back "no!!!!".

I would recommend trying out other resources if you're finding the lessons difficult. For example, I enjoyed the BBC video course "Mi vida loca", and it's helpful to talk with Spanish friends (in Spanish) as much as possible, and use the reference section or this site to learn more about grammar. Unfortunately, the lessons alone aren't really enough.

I also like to enable Spanish subtitles whenever possible on anything I watch on TV/DVD... treat it as a game where you try to figure out which Spanish words correspond to the spoken English words. It's challenging, because often the Spanish is phrased quite differently than English, but this way you can learn some Spanish while doing an activity that you were going to do anyway.

Spanish is a very difficult language at first because its grammar is so bewilderingly complex and its pronoun system is very ambiguous. I learned Esperanto before Spanish, and I think that helped me grasp core grammar ideas pretty well. There is a big "hump" you have to get over, after which it gets easier. But the hump is really big. Er, I guess that last sentence doesn't help you. But I'm now at the final lesson of Spanish 3, I have had tens of hours practice conversing with native speakers, and I went on a week vacation to Mexico, so it's starting to get easier.

Thanks, I do try to use spanish whenever possible. I find that is helping a lot! I watched a soap in Spanish the other day and was so proud when I realized I knew why everyone was crying and shouting haha - jackson555, Aug 28, 2011
I fully agree about ms. Whitmire. All she makes me think is: what toothpase is she advertising? - annierats, Aug 28, 2011
aI came back to this old thread, because the topic was pertinent to me now. Also when I was in costa Rico it was the lessons- yes with Peralee Whitmire that aved my bacon in the intensive language school I was in - I was floundering and those lessons help - Esteban_317, Mar 4, 2014
( al = I , Costa Rico, aved = saved, help = hellped) at lesson 33 I caught up to the grammar class I was in - It was a great day! - hope you are still studying Spanish . . . - Esteban_317, Mar 4, 2014

I would suggest that you sign up for a language community like Language for Exchange www.languageforexchange.com In this site, you can find pen pals to practice your Spanish, you can sign up then search for people from Spain who want to talk with you.
