The Giver ( by Louis Lowry ) it's recommended for teenagers and it's a great story

A Newbery Medal award book and a splendid, thrilling read, which is also quite accessible as a first reader. - territurtle, Aug 27, 2011
It was the first book I readed in English and I guess that is why I recommended that one - Claudi, Aug 28, 2011

I would also recommend the A Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snicket. There are 13 in the series. They are meant for young readers, so it would be fairly good for a non-native, and it is even written in such a way as to explain difficult vocabulary. The story is also fairly interesting for even adults to enjoy.

Have you heard of the Hunger Game trilogy? Best. Books. Ever.

I'm about 85% through the second book.

Book 1 - The Hunger Games

Book 2 - Catching Fire

Book 3 - Mockingjay

For anyone who wants to practice their Spanish with novels, here's the series in Spanish.

Los Juegos del Hambre

En llamas

How about the Harry Potter series or Percy Jackson series. P.S. Both are good series.

Whoever gave me a vote??? Gracias amigo/amiga! - poppypepper22, Aug 27, 2011
Although easy for a native English speaker, Harry Potter can be a little tough going for a non-native -- but when ready, they will love it! - territurtle, Aug 27, 2011
I agree and disagree - poppypepper22, Aug 27, 2011
True Harry Potter is very and I mean very good but it is fairly easy. But it might be a little hard for a native Spanish speaker. - poppypepper22, Aug 27, 2011
Lots of new vocabulary to be looking up, don't you think? - territurtle, Aug 27, 2011
It was confusing at the beginning because it was talking about a Muggle. Then I finally understand and yes lots of new vocabulary words even I have never heard about. Lol - poppypepper22, Aug 27, 2011
But true that he will probably enjoy them than just about any others listed. - territurtle, Aug 27, 2011
Yes most likely haven't really heard of the other ones. - poppypepper22, Aug 27, 2011
Have you read the Percy Jackson series? - poppypepper22, Aug 27, 2011
Not all of them, just two books. Enjoyed very much the Greek myth foundation and the idea of Percy's father -- because I *L O V E* water! - territurtle, Aug 27, 2011

I would recommend books by James Patterson. They are mostly written for the teen crowd but have very short and interesting chapters. I have recently finished the Maximum Ride and the Witch and Warlock series. I’m not a big reader but they kept my attention.

I put in another vote for The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I'm a native English speaker, read it twice in English and now I'm reading it en español. simple enough to understand and good vocab-builder

How about:

"The Catcher In the Rye" by JD Salinger
"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coehlo

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseni

"Every Night is Ladies' Night" by Michael Jaime-Becerra

The first three are fairly easily understandable novels with a good story line. The first one is a classic that is probably required reading for all teenagers in school and has a lot of slang from the 1940's, so some of it might be confusing.

The last one is a collection of short stories that are somewhat connected. It involves Mexican-Americans living in California.

Although superb literature and highly recommended, I would not consider them "easy" for a "first reader." - territurtle, Aug 27, 2011
Nor me. "Catcher in the Rye" would be difficult in my opinion. - ian-hill, Aug 27, 2011

You can read the novel Rage of Angels by Sidney Sheldon. That was my first English novel, it's a great novel and the language is not that difficult.
