Earthquake in Peru

I just noticed central Peru has experienced a 7.0 earthquake. I immediately thought about Sandy, but that is a devastating magnitude.

I just read another report that said the earthquake was deep (about 145 Km), so the damage above ground should be minimal for that magnitude.

After experiencing the effects of a 5.8 earthquake yesterday, I hope and pray she and the group she is with is safe.

7.0 was the magnitude of Haiti's earthquake of last year. However, due to their poor infrastructure, there was much worse devastation. I believe Peru is better shape from that point, but they are all still in my prayers.

Thanks for sharing Dogwood!

What is happening in the World...Chile, Haiti, New Zealand, Japan and the US East Coast yesterday!

Not to mention our 4.5 two weeks ago in St Lucia and our 7.1 back in 2007.

This is so alarming! big surprise shock

I sincerely hope that everybody in Peru is alright! I just don't understand why there have been so many natural disasters recently. It's really so sad, I can't imagine having such a thing happen in my area and possibling loosing my home, family members, friends...so sad...

The president of Iran said a while back it is God's way of telling women to dress modestly. - No short skirts or revealing tops. I am N O T joking. - ian-hill, Aug 24, 2011
Or it could be because of gay men in the US military: there are a lot of whacko theories. - lorenzo9, Aug 24, 2011
Did they have earthquakes before women dressed immodestly? :) - 0066c384, Aug 24, 2011
Of course not - it is a modern thing. - ian-hill, Aug 24, 2011

I have many good friends in Tarapoto (a jungle region in northern Peru) and so far have not heard any reports out of that area.....It is a poor region so I expect that there is/will be damage that the news will not talk about. Hoping everyone there is safe, since all the reports have only mentioned that it was felt as far as lima and have not talked about the local areas.

Here is some information from the Associated Press. It seems that it hit mostly jungle areas, but was felt in Lima.

I am shocked that there has been yet another earthquake this time in the land of my birth Peru and I feel for these people especially those poorer people who lve in exposed places ;like on mountain sides or in areas where the land is liable to subsidence. It must be particularly frightening for young children.

My prayers and thoughts are with these people and especially Sandy who is, I believe out there right now!

My Peruvian friend, who lives in Liverpool smile has been paying close attention as she has friends and family still there, so far no casualties, so everyone should be OK.
