Looking for a good spanish book to read

Question

I like reading and I believe you can learn a lot of language skills through reading, so I would like to test my improvement in Spanish by reading a Spanish novel. Does anyone have any good tips? Preferably a book with Spanish roots! Thanks in advance! x

You totally have to read La sombra del viento by Juan Ruiz Zafón, he is Spanish.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón. One of my favorites. If you like it, there is a prequel by him called El juego del ángel - bafalck, Aug 23, 2011

Debes leer "El alquimista" de Paulo Coelho y también "A la orilla del río Piedra me senté y lloré" del mismo autor. Me encantan ambos libros.

I really liked the book "Esperanza Renace" (Esperanza rising). Its written at a middle school level so it shouldn't be too difficult of a read.

Excellent choice, very amenable to a Spanish learner and a great tale.

you can read "Bodas De Sangre" it's a short play by Feredrico Garcia Lorca

The whole book can be accessed online so you don't have to pay any money and it's a pretty good read

Do you mean actually from Spain or written in Spanish (as opposed to being translated into Spanish from another language)?

I'm embarrassed that I can't think of a single contemporary Spanish author whose works I have recently read. ;(

Latin American authors are a different story:

In my opinion the best Spanish novels for Spanish students are those written specifically for us. I have a few at home. I think you would enjoy: Abcalia : El Viaje de los Sueños

It was recommended in my university because it's specific to learn Spanish and the novel itself got an award a few years ago. Hope you enjoy it!

Fiesta por Ernest Hemingway. No estaba escrito en español sino traducido, pero es de España y los Sanfermines. (The Sun Also Rises in English)

Catalina by W. Somerset Maugham. This isn't in Spanish, but it is again based in Spain. It's quasi-historical about Alcalá de Henares.

I just came across this great short story collection and MUST bring your attention to it. The stories 1) are not too complex to read yet very well written and 2) give a great insight into Latin American society. I would definitely recommend this read.
