inicio = página principal = homepage

I thought "página principal" would be ideal to mean "homepage" on a website, but I heard that "inicio" is preferable because it's shorter. Would you say "inicio" is a regional term (for example, mainly Central American) or would every website visitor understand it?

I have heard inicio more often (In Mexico anyways) as it is where you "start", and it make sence to call it that as you might not be staying on that page, or even coming back to it in that session.
